Coach Akeim, Founder and Athletic Director

 

 

Coach Akeim was born and raised in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.  He attended Temple University in Philadelphia where he majored in Sports Medicine and Management.  Coach Akeim is a former Director of a YMCA and owner of a successful small business in Philadelphia.

Upon relocating to Los Angeles in January 1998 he quickly found work as a Youth Sports Instructor for the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department.  Coach Akeim success with teaching children the fundamental skills for playing various sports led to the start of LA-Sports Kidz.

Over the past nine years Coach Akeim has truly cherished every opportunity to teach children how to have FUN while engaging in sports and leisure activities.  Coach Akeim is very excited about the opportunity to expand LA-Sports Kidz by offering additional classes in other communities, and the development of an e-commerce store offering a children's clothing line and sporting equipment.

Coach Phil

Phillip Henry

Coach Phil has been working with children for more than fifteen years and for the past seven years he has been teaching LA-Sports Kidz how to have FUN while learning how to play various sports. In 1998 Coach Phil and Coach Akeim met while working together for the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department. When Coach Akeim started LA-Sports Kidz and needed someone to assist him with classes he called Coach Phil and they have been working together every since.

Coach Phil's ability to effectively communicate with children and get down on their level to produce results has really contributed to the success of LA-Sports Kidz. The children and parents all appreciate Coach Phil's style of coaching. When Coach Phil is teaching LA-Sports Kidz it's hard to tell who is having the most FUN between him and the children.

Coach Phil attended Cal State University and he is currently still working for the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department. His responsibilities include organizing youth leagues, teaching sports classes and officiating baseball, basketball and flag football. Coach Phil also coaches varsity football at Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles.

The wisdom, patience, insight and friendly personality Coach Phil consistently demonstrates when working with children has really contributed to the success of LA-Sports Kidz.

The support and encouragement Coach Phil receives from his beautiful wife Robyn has ultimately contributed to Coach Phil being successful in all aspects of his life.


   

Coach D'Mitri

D'Mitri Baptist

Coach D'Mitri has five years of Physical Education teaching experience. He currently teaches at Franklin Elementary School in Santa Monica, CA where he’s been for 3 years. Coach D'Mitri was a star collegiate wide receiver at the University of Idaho where he earned a full scholarship. While attending the University he ran a sports camp and participated in the Special Olympics. When he's not teaching or coaching LA Sports Kidz he officiates youth basketball and football. He currently holds a B.A. degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies. D'Mitri has a genuine love for sports, kids and making a difference in their lives. He strives to help children in their personal growth by encouraging, motivating and praising their efforts and accomplishments. Coach D'Mitri is a great asset to LA Sports Kidz.

 


Coach Erik

Coach Erik

Coach Erik is a recent graduate of UCLA with a degree in psychology. For the past five years as an undergrad at UCLA Erik has worked extensively with youth. He has a strong sense of responsibility to provide his skills and knowledge for mentorship and positive impact on youth today. He believes that the way you interact with children and what we teach them will impact their futures. We are pleased to welcome Coach Erik to the LA-Sports Kidz family.

 

 

Coach Kam

Kameron Fields

Coach Kam has several years of experience as a Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Coordinator. There he coaches and referees basketball, baseball, and football. He also coordinates youth programs. Kameron is a graduate of Quincy University were he received his B.A. degree in Physical Education and a Minor in Exercise Science. He was an asset to their football team where he was a star running back for four years.


Coach Jesus

Jesus Prado

Coach Jesus is currently a student at UCLA with a major in Chicano Studies and a minor in Education. He has over five years experience working with youth as a teachers assistant and baseball Coach. He has a great passion for kids his goal after he graduates is to become an elementary school teacher. We are pleased to have Coach Jesus join us here at LA Sports Kidz

 

   
   

Coach Sean

Sean Anderson

Coach Sean joins LA Sports Kidz from Philadelphia Pennsylvania where he worked for the School district as a Physical Education and Health teacher for seven years. Coach Sean believes that the health and welfare of children utilizing sports as an enrichment tool is a very important strategy. Having been a gym teacher, swim instructor, collegiate athlete and professional football player he has hands on knowledge in the world of sports and instruction. Coach Sean is a Temple University graduate where he holds a B.A. degree in Business Administration and Marketing. Coach Sean is also a personal trainer and strength and conditioning specialist. We are pleased to have Coach Sean as part of the LA Sports Kidz team.

   

 

Coach Ethan

 

Ethan Edwards

Coach Ethan has over 15 years experience working with youth. He coached inner city youth basketball for many years. He has also mentored middle and high school students. Coach Ethan was a collegiate athlete at John Carroll University of Ohio. Additionally he is currently a world renowned singer and songwriter signed to Def Jam records. When he is not writing or singing he loves teaching kids life lessons while engaging in sports. Ethan feels teaching them fundamentals of sports will help them build a solid foundation of social, leadership, and team work skills. We are pleased to have Coach Ethan join us!!!

 

   

Coach Tyrus

Tyrus Nelson

Coach Tyrus is a former U.S. Marine who proudly served our country for five years. While serving in the military he was a star athlete and a youth sports coach. More specifically Coach Tyrus coached Intramural sports and was a mentor while serving in Iwakuni, Japan. He also coached summer youth programs in his home town of Weaver, Alabama where he also worked in the Calhoun County Elementary School System. Coach Tyrus has not only been an asset to our country but we know he will be an asset to LA Sports Kidz as well. We are excited to have him as part of our family!!

   
 
   

Coach Casey

Casey Deguchi

Coach Casey is a senior at Hamilton High School. He has a great passion for sports and working with children. His interest in coaching with LA Sports Kidz was directly related to his negative experience while playing in a soccer league. He does not want kids to experience not having fun while playing sports. Coach Casey is not only dedicated to working with children he also loves playing the drums in his high school band and engaging in karate. He is a great addition to our team.

 

   
 
   

Shylise M. Simpson- Office Manager


SHYLISE SIMPSON

Shylise Simpson is a fifteen-year administrative specialist in the non-profit arena. She holds an Associates degree in Business Administration and is currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Business Supervision. Ms. Simpson’s work in the administrative field has ranged from positions at a downtown law firm to the Administrative office manager for an environmental resources organization. Her most recent post before joining LA-Sports Kidz was as administrative assistant to Assembly Member Karen Bass, Executive Director / Founder of the Community Coalition and former Workplace Hollywood Board member.


Shylise’s interests include helping emancipated foster youth, encouraging women, volunteering for the Los Angeles Veterans Initiative, music production and engineering.

 

Kanyi Gethaiga - Administrative Assistant


Every business needs someone to keep things organized and running effectively. If you ever called the LA-Sports Kidz office, received a message on your phone, needed weather updates on classes, were asked to send payment, had a question regarding birthday parties, needed directions or just wanted to speak to Coach Akeim you probably spoke with our wonderful Administrative Assistat Kanyi. Kanyi has been working for LA-Sports Kidz for four years. Her hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated by the coaches, parents and ultimately all of the LA-Sports Kidz who have participated in one of our programs.
